Sex seems to be the national pastime

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I HAVE just read of the high incidence of AIDS in your paper. Yes, I agree, Jamaicans should be taught about using condoms. But I feel another issue should be addressed. I have never seen such bad morals as I see in Jamaica. I visit once a year and do not consider myself an expert on Jamaican culture. However, I can't believe, for instance, how one family of children has so many fathers. Sex seems to be the national pastime.

Does anyone there have a monogamous relationship? Do women and men ever get married, have children, raise a family and live together and enjoy their grandchildren together? Men just seem to come and go as they please fathering babies as they go. Why not have a national campaign on morals, commitment, and family life?

Don't get me wrong, I love Jamaica and its people. It's why I go back every year. But I am truly worried that no one will be left to go see with AIDS running rampant and no changes made in lifestyle.

I am etc.,
