Miss Jamaica should be born here!

THE EDITOR, Sir:

IT IS with a certain amount of disappointment and disillusionment that I write to question the criteria for entry to the Miss Jamaica World Beauty Pageant.

I recently read in the newspaper where our newly-crowned Ms. Jamaica World was born in Louisiana, USA! I hope this is an error.

How is it that this coveted title "Miss Jamaica World" can be won and our crown worn by an American-born individual? Is she a naturalised citizen?

With no disrespect intended to the new queen and her family, I can understand where let's say in sports, an individual of Jamaican parentage can choose to represent Jamaica; but for a highly nationalistic, individualistic title like Miss Jamaica World, I honestly feel that entrants should be Jamaican-born.

Nevertheless, best wishes and good luck to the new queen as she prepares to represent us in the Miss World Pageant.

I am, etc.,

STUNNED

Kingston
