GEORGETOWN, CMC:
WEST Indies captain Carl Hooper is among seven Test players called up by the Guyana selectors in a 30-man national squad to prepare for the 2001 Red Stripe Bowl limited overs cricket competition starting on October 2.
Guyana will host Zone B of the tournament which also features Barbados, Antigua and Southern Windwards.
Apart from Hooper, the other six, who all toured with the West Indies team to Zimbabwe and Kenya recently are middle order batsmen Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Ramnaresh Sarwan, left-arm orthodox spinner Neil McGarrell, leg-spinner Mahendra Nagamootoo and fast bowlers Reon King and Colin Stuart.
According to an official of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB), Hooper, who is residing in Australia, is expected in Guyana at least one week before the tournament starts.
West Indies Youth team players Narsingh Deonarine and Ron Matthews, just back from a successful tour of England, have also been included as well as Shell Academy graduates - opener Sewnarine Chattergoon, off-spinner Kevin Bazil and fast bowlers Reon Griffith and Esuan Crandon.
Opener Nicholas deGroot, who opted to play for Canada in the International Cricket Conference (ICC) World Cup qualifying tournament and who will form part of the successful Canadian squad at the 2003 competition, is also vying for a place in the Guyana squad following his return for the trials.
Chanderpaul and McGarrell were scheduled to lead two teams in trial matches at Bourda today and tomorrow but both matches have been ruled out because of heavy rain yesterday.
