Priory's easy sixth form

Iva Bailey addresses new 6th formers at Priory's (in St. Andrew) orientation last Wednesday. - Ian Allen

ARE YOU stuck at home thinking of an option after fifth form? Were your CXC grades so dismal that you've been rejected by your school's sixth form but are just not ready to face the working world yet? Or, do you want to go to university but just don't have the A' level qualifications?

Priory's Sixth Form Centre and Adult College may be the choice for you. The centre operates out of the Priory group of schools (Hope Road, St. Andrew). It's an independent college specialising in A'level and CXC tutoring for those preparing to enter universities. Priory has no strict 6th form requirements and will admit students with grades three and below marks. Students do not have to take all A'levels, they can build on strengths even in one subject area.

"Not because you didn't do well the first time around doesn't mean you shouldn't be given a second chance," programme director Iva Bailey said, "we'll work with you providing you're willing and maintain a certain level of discipline."

The school helps to strengthen students, over a two-year period, in areas where they are weak, said Mr. Bailey. However, they also work with those who want to sit A' level exams in one year.

He noted that Priory has had excellent exam results, especially in General Paper (GP). The school also has an excellent library and an open registration in September and January.

"As long as there's a willingness to learn, they will be matched with a teacher," Mr Bailey said, "the teachers are all graduates of teachers' colleges and are trained and experienced."

Traditional CXC courses are offered at $4,500 per term and A'levels courses at $5,500.

"Quite a number of our students also go on to North America after doing their SATs here," Mr Bailey added.
