'We are a nation under attack'

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I HAVE just read the report of the murder of three people, including a 14-year-old student, at the wake for another victim of murder by the gun, and I am angered and incensed by the sheer stupidity and ignorance of some of our people.

In a week when the world is in shock and grief at the awful massacre of innocent people in New York and Washington, D.C. by terrorists I can't help but think that here in Jamaica we are our own terrorists. We too are a nation under attack, only our terrorists are home-grown and we are our own enemy. It is time for the bloodletting and purposeless destruction of human life to cease.

The truth is that the same evil force behind the actions of those terrorists in the USA is the same force behind the doghearted gunmen in our own land. The enemy of our souls will use any mode, any method to achieve his aims: to mutilate and destroy mankind, the image of our God.

I am sick of reading of yet another death by gun or by reckless, lawless drivers on the road. I am sickened by the total disregard that we have for the value of human life, whether that of another person or our own. Yet, I realise that this battle cannot be fought on a natural front for the true enemy is not a natural one.

Unless, and until, each person will turn away from his own lawless way, and turn to the just and righteous ways of the Eternal One, Yahweh through His Son our Messiah we are doomed to continue in this downward spiral of a living hell. I pray for and look forward to the day when His return will usher in true peace. Until then may we each seek the peace within that only He can give, that we may extend that peace to our fellowman.

I am etc.,

M. REYNOLDS
