Cargill, Brown in charge

FORMER HEAD national coach Carl Brown and Peter Cargill, who both served as assistants to sacked technical director, Clovis de Oliveira, were yesterday put jointly in charge of the national squad ahead of their next World Cup qualifier.

Jamaica, who are in fifth spot on eight points in the CONCACAF Group of six, next play the United States in Boston on October 7.

According to a release issued by the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) yesterday, the decision was reached last night at a meeting of the body's technical staff. It added "the search for a new technical director for the national football programme as well as the assessment of the national technical staff is continuing".

Former technical director de Oliveira was fired in the early hours of September 6, following Jamaica's 1-0 loss to Honduras in that country. The loss meant Jamaica's chances of qualifying for their second successive World Cup finals ranged from very slim to non-existent.

In announcing the firing, JFF president Captain Horace Burrell said he would seek a replacement as soon as possible and that the performance of the other members of the coaching staff would be evaluated.

Subsequently, he said his search would take place in South America (not limited to Brazil as was previously the case) and Europe.

In a conversation earlier in the day, JFF general secretary Horace Reid said despite the actions of terrorists in the US which had claimed the lives of thousands and caused panic, all plans were in place for the game to go ahead in Boston. The Jamaica squad is expected to be named within 24 hours.
