Alston, E. Allen on top

By Paul A. Reid, Staff Reporter

WESTERN BUREAU:

ALSTON HIGH and Edwin Allen raced to their third wins yesterday as the Pepsi/Sports Plus daCosta Cup competition rolled on.

Unfancied Alston, who failed to advance to the inter-zone round last season, scored an upset 2-0 win over the previously unbeaten Aabuthnott Gallimore to take sole leadership of Zone G with nine points.

Edwin Allen extended their lead in Zone H with a 3-1 win over Central High to set up a clash against former champions Clarendon College on Saturday.

Eight more schools including former champions St. Elizabeth Technical (STETHS) and Dinthill will seek their third wins this afternoon as the competition continues with 18 games in eight zones.

In Zone B action yesterday, seven-time champions Rusea's Comprehensive brought the bright start of minnows Merlene Ottey to an end with a 4-0 spanking in Pond Side.

Lanky striker Huntley Campbell repaid coach Emerson Henry's confidence with a brace of goals, scoring in the 39th and 57th minutes. Campbell had come on as a second-half substitute in Rusea's previous game, a 1-1 draw against Anchovy on Saturday.

Dwayne Jumpp had given Rusea's the lead after 24 minutes while Trace Jolly scored the other goal in the 32 for the winners who led 3-0 at the end of a scrappy first half.

Anchovy Comprehensive maintained their lead in the zone on goal difference with a 3-0 win over Green Island. Anchovy and Rusea's are both on seven points.

Frome Technical, last season's beaten Ben Francis KO finalists continued to struggle, going down to a shock 2-0 defeat to Grange Hill at the Belle Isle Sports Centre.
