Mountain View tense, cop injured in shoot-out

Lynford Simpson, staff reporter

The Constabulary Communication Network (CCN) last night confirmed that a policeman was shot and injured during a shootout with gunmen in the lower Mountain View Avenue area of Kingston.

His condition was not ascertained up to press time.

While information was sketchy, the CCN said it was in the process of preparing a statement to advise motorists to avoid the Mountain View Avenue area which remained tense after nearly 14 hours of sporadic shooting which started about 4:00 a.m. yesterday.

Shots were reportedly being fired in the Back Bush and Jarrett Lane areas. There were no reports of gunfire in nearby Jacques Road, and no indication as to whether it was related to the recent killing of four persons at 63 Mountain View Avenue.

Reports reaching The Sunday Gleaner are that buses belonging to the State-owned Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) were re-routed from Mountain View Avenue and motorists were advised to use Windward Road. A strong police presence was being maintained in the area up to press time.
