Fast food fever

THIS STORY is on the Go-Local Community web site for Montego Bay. Please check out this and other similar stories at www.go-montegobay.com Montego Bay has experienced its own fair share of fast food 'colonisation.' And, like everywhere else in the island, residents have welcomed each new outlet with open arms. Informed sources state that Juicy Beef will shortly be establishing a factory in the city both to meet a heavy local demand and to prepare for export.

Meanwhile, the king of fast foods, Kentucky, is also enjoying boom times, from the looks of students and adults alike trooping in and out every hour on the hour. The city is the largest location of Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) and Pizza Hut in the Caribbean representing an investment of more than $100 million.

The KFC restaurant which has a capacity to seat 200 people, became number 18 in the chain, when it opened its doors. Burger mavens McDonald's and Burger King received some serious competition from this point on, as the new restaurant featured a play area also.

Island Grill is among the latest of these fast food chains to arrive in the West. Montego Bay is its fifth store in the island. The Union Street restaurant, specialising in jerk seasoned fish and chicken, cost approximately $14 million to complete. The chains are providing a jab in the arm for the local agricultural sector and are a source of direct employment. In the region of 900 workers are currently employed to both local and 'foreign' fast food chains.
