WESTERN BUREAU:
TWO MEN held by the police in connection with various crimes including the abduction of Nordia England, were positively identified following an Identification Parade on Friday September 14 at the Negril Police Station. The men were formally charged with abduction. One of the men is to face another identification parade in order to determine his involvement in other crimes committed in the parish of St. James.
The breakthrough was made, when on September 4 a stolen, white Toyota motorcar, en-route from Negril to Savanna-la-Mar, got out of control and overturned in a ditch on the Top Hill main road in Westmoreland. The three male passengers in the car reportedly tried to make their escape but were quickly intercepted by the police. However, the driver of the car made good his escape while the other two men were taken into custody, after a search of the car revealed an identification card bearing the name of Nordia England, who was abducted after a passenger vehicle in which she was travelling was allegedly hijacked by three men on August 29. She returned home four days after her abduction. It was reported that one of the two men taken into custody was released after questioning, and nothing incriminating was found.
One of the men pointed out on the identification parade, was the driver of the overturned vehicle who earlier eluded the police. His name is being withheld as he is to face other identification parades. The developments that led to his arrest took place in Mount Salem, St. James. According to the police, the suspect and another man boarded a taxi at Sam Sharpe Square, Montego Bay. On reaching Mount Salem they allegedly brandished guns, robbed the driver of $800 and ordered him to take them to Wakefield in the parish of Trelawny. On their way, they were met upon by a passing police patrol vehicle and it was alleged that the men opened fire at the lawmen and abandoned the vehicle in which they were travelling. In a bid to escape the suspect was set upon by citizens who beat and handed him over to the police. The men are to face trial.
