Youth Link party, 1,000 strong

By Nagra Plunkett, Freelance Writer

WESTERN BUREAU-

OVER 1,000 persons were present at the party to mark the official launch of the Youth Link Magazine in Western Magazine on Saturday.

Dubbed the 'After-match Party, the event kicked off about 5:20 p.m. on the in-field at Jarrett Park in Montego Bay following a daCosta Cup football match between Cornwall College and St. James High School. Cornwall won game scoring three goals to St.James' one.

Music, young people, dancing, food and prizes added to the excitement that filled the atmosphere. The MoBay party is the third launch of the Youth Link Magazine across Jamaica. There were parties in Kingston and May Pen prior to Western Jamaica's.

The magazine Youth Link, which is geared towards young people and the young at heart, can be found inside the edition of the Daily Gleaner on Tuesdays. The Gleaner's Janet Silvera took time off from journalism and carried out MC duties. She did a superb job and even showed off her dancing skills to the selections played by Pieces Disco, adding more vibes to the gathering.

The event began with presentations from William Knibb Memorial and St. James High Schools cheerleaders' squads. The Knibb girls from Trelawny went through their routines made up of cheerleading songs with dance moves, cartwheels, splits and pyramid formations.

The six-member squad from St. James High chose to their presentation to a compilation of pop songs. Clad in their little blue and yellow outfits, the girls got the screams of the crowd when they performed their daring moves to Missy Elliott's 'Get Your Freak On'.

Little Britney, about three years old, could not be forgotten. She boldly went and told the MC she wanted to dance. The little girl charmed the crowd with her 'log-on' dance.

There were also impromptu performances from Montego Bay deejays and dance group before the appearance of DJ LA Lewis. He did 'Pop It Off' which he said is the newest dance craze.

Prizes compliments of The Gleaner Company were given to persons who answered correctly to the questions asked on their knowledge of the Youth Link Magazine.

The party, however, ended prematurely as a result of unruly behaviour by members of the crowd.
