O'Meally Nelson CARIBBEAN POSTMASTERS General are seeking to have a joint approach to the mail transportation problems caused by new international security measures instituted since the recent terrorist attacks in the United States.
Confirming the development, Jamaica's Postmaster General, Dr. Blossom O'Meally Nelson, said that the issue was a regional one which has prompted the Caribbean Postal Union to start looking for a solution.
"It is a problem for the entire Caribbean. We had a meeting with the Caribbean Postal Union and we decided that we are going to make Caribbean-wide arrangements with a freight carrier, so we won't have to get into this again. We want to invite people to tender on that," she said.
In May this year, DHL Worldwide Express and the Barbados Postal Service initiated an international service, Worldwide Postal Express, providing 17 postal branches in the Caribbean island with international express service capabilities, including shipping expertise.
Dr. O'Meally Nelson said that her office was also in discussions with DHL on a mail express service, but that costs had triggered the delay. She said that she may have to ask the Cabinet to give approval to a proposal which would give Jamaicans the option of utilising a worldwide express service at a higher cost, to get around the delays caused by the new security measures.
