Evil as entertainment THE EDITOR, Sir: WITHOUT A doubt, the recent suicide attacks in New York and Washington D.C. are manifestations of evil. Television programming has been focused on what is being called a 'War against America', whether against freedom or foreign policy. But the plan was evil a plan to destroy human lives. The networks have shown mayhem, confusion, destruction, pain and suffering over and over. We have looked at and heard these stories as news, acknowledging them as news of evil. Similarly, there is a significant level of masterminded evil composed, orchestrated, and captured on film for cinema and television audiences. Hijacking of aeroplanes, and aeroplanes as missiles are features of films already made for television and the big screen. Mayhem, confusion, destruction and all ranks of wickedness and evil with accompanying pain and suffering are showcased as entertainment. From the standpoint of masterminding, I am not sure who is more original. From the standpoint of implementation, virtual reality has become reality. From the standpoint of the networks, both have great money-making potential. From the standpoint of the conscious viewer the tragedy of reality is enough.
