Cop challenges dismissal from Police Force

A POLICEMAN who was dismissed from the Police Force in July this year after serving for 27 years is challenging his dismissal on the ground that it was unfair to fire him for minor breaches.

He is George Anthony Lawrence, an Acting Corporal of Police who was stationed at the Savanna-la-Mar Police Station at the time of his dismissal.

A Court of Enquiry found Lawrence guilty of three charges. He was found guilty of threatening a policeman that he would shoot him, using indecent language to a woman who he had owed money, and leaving his post to which he was assigned. Following the Court of Enquiry's ruling, Lawrence was dismissed from the Police Force.

Lawrence is contending that the charges for which he was found guilty and dismissed were minor charges which did not warrant a dismissal.

Mr. Justice Roy Anderson after hearing submissions yesterday from attorney-at-law Arthur Kitchin who is representing Lawrence, granted leave for the case to be decided by the Judicial Review Court. The application was made in chambers at the Supreme Court.

Lawrence will be seeking a court order to quash the order from the Commissioner of Police, dismissing him from the Force.
