FORMER West Indies captain Brian Lara arrived in the island yesterday with the Trinidad and Tobago team for the Red Stripe Bowl which starts tomorrow.
The double world record holder had not played any cricket since returning prematurely from the tour of Zimbabwe in July due to a hamstring injury. Despite not taking part in any of his team's trial matches the left-hander was looking quite lean and fit but was reluctant to speak about his readiness for the competition.
"I am not fully fit yet," he squeezed out when asked about his condition and as the reporters chased him, he followed it up with, "I don't know...I just have to try it out and see," when asked how far along the road to full fitness he was.
As to his personal expectations for the season he said: "Hopefully I will last."
Lara's captain, Dinanath Ramnarine was more positive in his outlook on Lara and the chances of his team. His team team he said has been training for close to a month and are keen to do well.
"Brian has certainly added to our batting lineup and we all know what he can do if he gets going. He has been working hard with the team.
"He has been working hard with the team and helping with the youngsters and helped poor preparation with the team. It is difficult to really judge (his form) because he has not really played a game but I know what Brian is capable of doing and he is certainly showing commitment to our team and we are hoping that he will have a really fantastic season."
