MINISTER OF Industry, Commerce & Technology, Phillip Paulwell, and representatives from investment promotion agency, JAMPRO, left for the U.S. on September 27.
The Minister was scheduled yesterday to address the membership of the Northern Textile Association in Jacksonville, Florida on the subject of the garment business in Jamaica and the outlook for joint ventures and partnerships with U.S. textile manufacturers. The Minister and his team also participated in the annual retreat of the Congressional Black Caucus in Washington D.C. on September 28.
The visit, which comes to an end today, is particularly significant at this time in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks by terrorists on the United States and its impact on the Jamaican economy. The opportunity is therefore being used to network and showcase Jamaica as an investment destination, with the support of Mirant, the U.S. energy firm, which co-sponsors an event to honour three members of the Congressional Black Caucus, in Washington.
Mirant, who acquired over 80 per cent of the JPSCo., is eager to explore other business opportunities in Jamaica and the wider Caribbean. They have promised their support to assist Jamaica in its marketing missions in the USA and a series of joint promotional activities between Mirant and JAMPRO are planned for later this year.
The members of the Black Caucus to be honoured serve on the powerful Commerce Committee of Congress. They are congressman Albert R. Wynn; Edolphus "Ed" Towns and Bobby Rush.
