Word Alive Launched

Carlene Davis

REVEREND JACQUELINE McCullough and the Daughters of Rizpah launched the Word Alive Clinic, women's conference, and concert at the Hilton Kingston Hotel on Wednesday.

During a two-hour launch, which featured entertainment by Ziggy Soul and the group Forgiven, the audience was provided with a preview of what to expect during the week-long activities of the Word Alive Ministry.

Between October 16 and October 18, the Word Alive team will be touching the lives of Jamaicans both physically and spiritually through a free clinic to be held at the New Testament Church of God in Portmore, St. Catherine.

For the first time in the five years that the team has been visiting the island, a women's conference, hosted by Bevon Morrison, manager of Call Associates, will be held at the Hilton Kingston Hotel and Church on the Rock between October 18 and October 20.

The week's events will have its grand finale with a concert featuring Donnie McClurkin, Deniece Williams, Ziggy Soul, Carlene Davis, Jackie McCullough, Papa San, Kencot Seventh Day Adventist Church, and the Portmore Vision Choirs at the National Arena.

The Word Alive Crusade, spearheaded by Reverend McCullough, a Jamaican living overseas, has been coming to the island for the past five years.

Reverend McCullough said a delegation of 200 to 250 persons is expected to volunteer at this year's World Alive Crusade. She pointed out that a delegation of at least 400 people was expected to attend but the recent September 11 terrorist attack on the United States has caused many of them to stay behind.

However, this year, she said the team will be depending a lot on local medical personnel to assist at the three-day clinic.

The clinic will provide a wide variety of medical services as well as free drugs for all the patients seen. Also, this year, for the first time, the clinic will provide pap smear tests.

In addition to the medical services being offered, patients will be sent home with a care package which will consist of items bought from local businesses in the area.

Revernd McCullough explained that this trip is costing more than US$100,000. She also pointed out that most of the volunteers, except the dentist and the doctors, are coming into the island at their own expense.

The Word Alive Crusade have attracted many sponsors, Tommy Cowan, manager of Glory Music, promoters of the Word Alive Concert said.

For the first time the gospel concert will be having the support of Kentucky Fried Chicken. The Jamaica Tourist Board has also endorsed this event.
