A boost for Portmore's tourism

THE EDITOR, Sir:

THE LONG awaited Portmore Community Tourism Organisa-tion was officially launched at the Twin City Restaurant in Portmore on Friday, October 5, 2001.

The organisation, according to Member of Parliament, Dr. Paul Robertson is a step in the right direction for sustainable tourism development, both in the Portmore Community and Jamaica by extension.

The objectives of the organisation outlined by executive member and student of UWI, Roxanne Malcolm, should be heard by the Ministry of Tourism and especially Minister Portia Simpson Miller. There are plans to establish 22 tourism clubs in schools in Portmore, a heritage tour, a tour-guide training programme and the awarding of three scholarships each year in tourism and hospitality-related training. This is the type of community tourism we should be supporting.

I lift my cap to three of the many women in that organisation; principal of Portmore Community College, Mrs. Karren Kennedy; acting director of the Portmore Youth and Community Tourism Organisation (PYCTO), Mrs. Merlene Beal-Weathers and her deputy, Mrs. Yvonne Bicknall and of course the entire team.

Keep up the good work PYCTO I will be watching you.

I am, etc.,

EGETON F. NEWMAN
