STETHS, Spalding in hunt

By Paul A. Reid, Staff Reporter

WESTERN BUREAU:

FORMER CHAMPIONS St. Elizabeth Technical High (STETHS) and Spalding need just a point each to confirm their places in the inter-zone round of the Pepsi/Sports Plus daCosta Cup competition this afternoon.

The tournament continues with six games. The final set of scheduled games will be played tomorrow when most of the 24 places in the inter-zone round will be secured.

So far, 13 schools have booked their places in the next phase.

Both teams will have an eye on other results in their zones as Black River in C and Christiana in G are in with slim chances of sneaking into the next round.

Spalding should have the easiest of the paths as they have a vastly superior goal difference to Christiana's and even a loss could still see them going through.

Spalding, on 17 points, have a goal differential of plus-12 while Christiana, a point back, have plus one. For Christiana to get through, they have to beat qualifiers Aabuthnott Gallimore by 12 clear goals and hope Spalding lose to Alston.

Christiana edged Aabuthnott Gallimore 1-0 in the first round while Spalding beat Alston 2-0 and will start favourites to win again today.

The situation in Zone E is more competitive with one team taking on a whipping boy and the other facing what could be a tough competitor.

Black River will be licking their lips at the thought of taking on Balaclava who have conceded 61 goals including 11 against Lacovia on Tuesday.

STETHS will be up against a feisty Lacovia team that could make things tough for them, In the first round the former champs escaped with a 1-0 win.

Lacovia looked like contenders early in the season but have since faded but their 11-1 win on Tuesday shows they could still help decide the fate of the other teams ahead of them.

TODAY'S GAMES

Zone E: Munro vs Maggotty, STETHS vs Lacovia, Black River vs Balaclava.

Zone G: Spalding vs Alston, Holmwood vs Mile Gully, Aabuthnott vs Christiana.
