Tighter security for Seaga

Seaga

COMMISSIONER FRANCIS Forbes has increased the number of police personnel securing Opposition Leader Edward Seaga.

Head of the Constabulary Com-munication Network (CCN), Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) James Forbes said the Commissioner made the decision following a meeting yesterday with Mr. Seaga.

According to DSP Forbes, the Commissioner also met with the head of Mr. Seaga's security team, Inspector Astor Osbourne, and the head of the police's Protective Service Division, Superintendent Hector Lewis, which provides the personnel protecting political leaders and Ministers of Government.

Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) spokesman on national security Derrick Smith declined to elaborate on the new arrangements, when contacted yesterday but commented that, "As of now, we are less anxious about the threats because of the new strategies agreed on."

Mr. Smith confirmed that the Commissioner met with Inspector Osbourne and with the Oppo-sition Leader and himself, seperately.

"We had discussions in relation to the latest round of threats on his life. There were additional strategies and measures discussed and agreed on," Mr. Smith affirmed.

Prime Minister P.J. Patterson on Thursday instructed the Commissioner to have the death threats against Mr. Seaga's life thoroughly investigated. This was after the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) revealed that threats have been made on Mr. Seaga's life since his comments about the issuing of Government contracts to PNP activists.
