St. Catherine:
THE PORTMORE Missionary Church will tomorrow, October 28, celebrate with Missionary Church leaders, civic leaders, friends and family a number of important milestones in the life of the church and its pastor. The function is scheduled to take place on the grounds of the church at 114 Cecile Ave., in Bridgeport, Portmore at 4:30p.m.
Tomorrow's celebration will mark the 27th Anniversary of the church as well as the installation of its Pastor, the Reverend Garnett Roper and his 20th year in the clergy as an ordained Minister.
Among the activities planned for the afternoon include, musical pieces by the combined choir of the Portmore Missionary Church; the Agape singers; the Rosemount Missionary church and reflections on the church's 27 years of service in the community. Tributes on Reverend's Roper 20 years in the Missionary church will be done by his peers, community and civic leaders and friends. Guest Speaker is the Reverend Donavan Myers, Pastor of the Rosemount Missionary Church and former Vice President of the Missionary Church Association, now Chairman of the Pastoral Concerns Department.
The church, which has been a strong force in the landscape of the Portmore community was pastored for some twenty years by the Rev. Dr. Sam Green, now President of the Missionary Church Association and pastor of Grace Missionary Church in Kingston. Among some of the outreach programmes conducted by the church are counselling services, entrepreneurial advice, literacy classes as well as outreach to the prisons and senior citizens. The church is also responsible for administration of the Portmore Missionary Preparatory School, which is also located on the Cecile Avenue property.
The Portmore Missionary Church has a congregation in excess of 500 persons and serves a broad cross section of the St. Catherine community with members not only from the immediate community but also from other areas in the parish.
