A NUMBER of the island's top amateur golfers have been recruited for today's Capital and Credit Corporate Golf Championship at the Caymanas Golf and Country Club.
Thirty-six four-man teams will chase the Capital and Credit Trophy and one of two berths to the Caribbean Corporate Golf Championship which is slated for next month at the White Witch and Three Palms courses near Montego Bay.
Each team must feature at least two members of the competing company but the other two places are 'open', which has led to a flurry of recruiting. Former national champion John Smith will play for primary sponsors Capital and Credit, fellow Hoerman Cup teammate Michael Scott will swing away for National Commercial Bank, promising teenager Xavier Rose finds himself on the Wackenhut side while national women's champion Maggie Lyn will represent Life of Jamaica.
The defending champions are Jamaica Broilers Group (Chris Levy, John Bailey, David Mair, Chris Warskow) but they should face stiff challenges from the likes of Red Stripe, NEM Insurance, Airwatt Manufacturing, FW Woolworth, Scotiabank and SuperClubs.
Each team will be divided into pairs and they will tee off at 7:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. (shotgun starts). Players will also compete for the Digicel Par-3 Championship, the Esso Longest Drive, a Nearest the Pin competition sponsored by Yes Golf and a Hole in One prize of a Silverado donated by Challenger Sport.
Other sponsors include SuperClubs, Jamaica Broilers, Air Jamaica, Half Moon Hotel, Facey, Mussons Jamaica, Juici Beef Patties, Air Watt and Catherine's Peak.
Associate sponsor the Le Meridien Jamaica Pegasus Hotel will host the awards ceremony following the tournament.
A putting competition and cocktail party was held at the Constant Spring Golf Club last night as a lead-in to today's event.
