Solid Gold: a success abroad

TO many people there is nothing more satisfying than winning a competition. This is the feeling four Jamaican sound system selectors, from the sound Solid Gold, have had ever since they won a sound system clash abroad three weeks ago.

The event, held in Montreal, Canada, saw the Jamaicans up against selectors on Stereo Choice from New York, U.S.A. and Crystal from Montreal, Canada.

Solid Gold's selectors are Fabian 'Sojie' Fletcher, Horace 'Skeow' Swaby, Coniel 'Johno' Wilson and Fitz-Albert 'Super G' Davis.

"We really treasure this trophy because it spells achievement and we have worked very hard for it. Whenever Jamaicans go abroad and do well we should let others know about it because it is real hard work," said Fletcher, who is also the manager.

It took Solid Gold about four solid weeks of preparation, acquiring new dubplates of deejays and singers.

The competition allowed each sound system 90 minutes playing time, climaxing with a dub-for-dub session. Points were given for punctuality and creativity, among others.

Team members said the outcome of the event brought loud cheers from Jamaicans living in London. "They (Jamaicans) would love to see us back again so that we can show off our skills of selecting the right type of music," Fabian said.

In the meantime, the sound system has been playing at a number of venues, including parties and dances, especially in St. Catherine and the Corporate Area.
