NEWCOMERS Bellefield Comprehensive and St. James High are a point away from the semi-finals of the Pepsi/Sports Plus daCosta Cup after playing to a 1-1 draw in their Group Two game at Jarrett Park yesterday.
Both teams stayed on top of the group with four points, three more than St. Thomas Technical and Edwin Allen Comprehensive who played to a 2-2 draw in their game at G.C. Foster College.
The two berths from Group One are still wide open after defending champions Cornwall College and Glenmuir High scored impressive wins to lead the group with four points each.
Leighton Coleman scored four times to lead Glenmuir to a big 6-1 win over Vere who are now out of the running for a place in the next round.
Cornwall College, with two goals from captain Garrick Gordon, turned back Rusea's Comprehensive 2-0 at Jarrett Park.
Despite their loss, Rusea's are still in the running for a semi-final place as they have three points.
At Jarrett Park, Cornwall College dominated the game as they forced Rusea's back on their heels after an aggressive start, forcing three straight corners in the first five minutes.
After missing some close chances and hitting the bar from just on the edge of the six-yard box in the 34th minute, Gordon snatched the lead in the 41st minute. A cross from Kirkland Smith caught the Rusea's defence coming out for the counter and Gordon headed the ball over the head of the advancing goalkeeper Jacomeno Barrett.
A minute after Ricardo Facey missed a good chance to pull Rusea's level, Gordon doubled Cornwall's lead with a well-taken goal in the 57th minute. Striking on the counter attack, Gordon raced past a defender, cut inside and gave Barrett no chance with a shot into the far corner.
In the first game of the doubleheader, Bellefield surged into an early lead against St. James High and had to settle for a point. Cleon Barrett scored for the Manchester team after 11 minutes but Xavier Brown snatched the equaliser in the 77th minute for St James who had the better of the second half.
