WESTERN BUREAU:

THE ROTARY Club of Black River in St. Elizabeth is currently undertaking the construction of two additional classrooms at the Giddy Hall Primary School in the parish.

President of the club, Jayson Gollab said that while the club was actively pursuing the project, they would however welcome any kind of assistance towards the completion of the project.

In an effort to garner much needed funds, Mr. Gollab said the club would be staging a grand fundraising event at the Independence Park in Black River on December 1.

"This will take the form of a cricket extravaganza and a family fun day. We are looking forward to have a few players who have represented Jamaica to participate in this event. Contact has already been made and we are really anticipating a grand turnout," Mr. Gollab stated.

He had high praises for the citizens and parents for the level of assistance they have given resulting in the cost of the project staying at a relatively low $150,000. The project should be completed within another seven months.

The Rotary Club of Black River is this year celebrating its 28th year of existence and Mr. Gollab said that despite starting out in small numbers, the club has been a force to reckon with, having accomplished a lot of their goals.

Last year, the club completed an eight-block classroom at the Black River High School at a cost of just under $7 million and handed it over to the Ministry of Education. The construction of this project lasted for four years.

"We do not normally receive matching grants from Rotary International for projects like these, so we have to fund them independently by putting on fund-raisers annually. We also got some support from the Parent-Teachers' Association and Member of Parliament Donald Buchanan," Mr. Gollab said.
