Jamaican teachers in New York have themselves to blame

THE EDITOR, Sir,

THE SAGA of Caribbean and other teachers who were commissioned by the New York City Board of Education in the late summer, continues. In their eagerness to escape their homeland, some of those teachers accepted contracts which were a bit unfair. However, there is no one else to blame but themselves as some form of research should have been conducted before the jobs were accepted.

I have no doubt that the NYC schools have showed up the flaws of how we choose to educate in the Caribbean. Nor is it a secret that our teachers were placed in the worst of schools, hence the indiscipline and horrible working environment. However, let's thank God for the opportunity these teachers were so eager to grasp and which I was against. They should all go home as Jamaica needs them more than America does.

Using this experience to change the way we treat our own Jamaican students at home should do wonders. Each child would receive the attention he or she needs and no one would ever be written off as hopeless or "dunce" again.

I am etc.,
