Minibus driver sentenced to six months imprisonment

DEVON WEIR, a minibus driver whose licence had been suspended earlier this year, was sentenced on Wednesday to six months imprisonment for defiance of the law.

He was charged as the traffic police and the Transport Authority continued their drive to crackdown on illegal operators in the Corporate Area.

Police reports are that Mr Weir was driving a white Toyota Hiace minibus licensed PA6086 on Wednesday when he was stopped along Hagley Park Road by a group from the Transport Authority and the traffic police. Mr Weir was asked to produce his driver's licence when he evaded the police and left the bus. He was later spotted on the compound of the Transport Authority when he was apprehended and taken to the Traffic Court. He was then sentenced to six months for his defiance of the court order.

The Transport Authority stepped up its efforts this week against illegal motor vehicle operators in direct response to what it said was an increase in illegal activities in the Kingston Metropolitan Transport Region. Routine checks continue in areas where they believe that these vehicles frequent. Earlier this week, 11 illegal vehicles were seized in a taxi crackdown in the Corporate Area.
