C&W manager denied bail

WESTERN BUREAU:

CABLE AND Wireless communication manager Lenford Myers who is charged with breaches of the Dangerous Drugs Act, was denied bail when he appeared in the Montego Bay RM court Friday.

Myers, 45, who was remanded in custody when he appeared before Resident Magistrate Paulette Williams on December 10, was back in court for the hearing of his bail application.

On Monday, Attorney Ernie Smith, who represents Myers, had argued that his client had no idea the drug was in the handle of the suitcase which he had in his possession at the time of his arrest. He also said the suitcase did not belong to Myers, but was being taken to a relative abroad.

However, investigating officer Cpl. Owen Taylor told the court that the suitcase was empty and Myers had said at the time of his arrest that he was going abroad on company business and to do some shopping.

Myers was arrested at the Sangster International Airport last week Friday when sniffer dogs alerted police to a suitcase in his possession. Substance resembling cocaine was allegedly found in the handle of the suitcase. Myers pleaded not guilty. The case will be heard again today, when bail application will be considered.
