Gunshots trigger stampede at reggae show

AN UNSPECIFIED number of people were injured in a stampede triggered by gunshots at a dance/show at the Mas Camp venue, Oxford Road, New Kingston, Saturday night.

A number of persons were trampled sustaining injuries and a section of the venue was badly damaged.

The event was the 29th anniversary show for the renowned sound system Stone Love. There were about 7,000 patrons inside the venue at the time. The show came to an abrupt end after the incident.

Several artistes who were backstage panicked, while many tried protecting themselves behind large posts which held up billboards. Others tried scaling the fence.

Some sources say that the stampede was triggered by a "gun salute," but others claimed that it resulted from a clash between two gangs attending the event.

The Gleaner's entertainment desk quoted DJ Spragga Benz as admitting that he heard gunshots and suggesting, "I think people were shooting to prevent other people from coming towards them.

The police Constabulary Communications Network (CCN) when contacted said it could only report that some shots were fired at the event resulting in a stampede, but reported no injuries.

See report on the "Stone Love Stampede" in Section C3 of the Gleaner and in this afternoon's Star.
