Hot Arnett drub Spring

By Nodley Wright, Staff Reporter

Boyd ... another double

ARNETT Gardens had a very fruitful day at the Harbour View Mini-Stadium yesterday.

The defending Craven A National Premier League (NPL) champions won both the Under-21 and the NPL end of first round finals in convincing fashion. In the Under-21 game they swamped Harbour View 4-0 with goals from Anthony Burke (48th), Leon Strickland 70th and 72nd before Oneil Marshall sealed the issue in the 89th minute.

That performance was only a taste of what was to come as the seniors went one better. A double from Walter Boyd - his second in successive matches - in the 12th and 56th minutes; One each from Jonathan Williams (24th), Adonis Maxwell in the 84th minute and Fabian Davis in the 89th minute set up the 5-1 win. Constant Spring captain Carlington Clarke pulled one back from the penalty spot in time added.

For their troubles the Arnett Gardens collected $30,000 for the Under-21s and $75,000 for the seniors in addition to a trophy each. Harbour View Under-21s received $20,000 while Constant Spring collected $45,000.

The Arnett Gardens senior team were also awarded three points for the win while Constant Spring got one.

"Well, one, it was an excellent victory. Two...Constant Spring played a class team this time around," said Arnett Gardens coach Jerome Waite reacting to his team's victory.

"If you noticed this time we showed character from in the defensive, midfield as well as the offensive third," he continued.

Constant Spring's Danny Lyn felt that his team abandoned their style of play and surrendered the game. "First of all I must say congratulations to Arnett Gardens. However, we were out-hustled and outrun totally. I mean Arnett Gardens outplayed us....it is something that we have to look at and investigate and see how we can correct it.

"We played totally out of character. We gave Arnett Gardens the midfield. This is totally opposite to the way we play. Our strength is our attack.

"We did not put any attack together all day. I mean all we were doing was just backing up and I think we have to look at what took place. We were not organised in defence and you see it in the end result, 5-1.

The result was an accurate reflection of the game except for the early exchanges when Constant Spring and especially Kibaki Holloway looked as if he would have caused problems. That would fizzle out soon after as Arnett Gardens led by the troublesome pair of Boyd and Williams harrassed the Constant Spring defence until it cracked.

After failing on two earlier occasions, Boyd came up with the goods after a dribble across the goal was aborted with a foul by Clarke just outside the 18-yard box.

Boyd got up and curled a wicked left-footer in the left hand corner of the net as the goalkeeper and the wall stood spellbound. The pace of the game pickd up as Arnett Gardens launched raid after raid on the Constant Spring goal area.

Constant Spring had a rare effort on goal in the 20th minute as Oneil McDonald tested Selvin Collins with a 28-yard drive from a freekick. A minute later Boyd had a header just high.

The 2-0 lead came in the 24th minute from Williams. The little livewire received a ball on the right flank and cut in between two defenders with one move, got himself into the box and fired a shot which slipped under the body of goalkeeper Kelvin Brown.

A number of other chances were to be created and missed by Arnett without further addition to the score. Constant Spring never mounted much in terms of attcak as Greg Gardner and his strike partner were kept in check by man-markers Oneil Dunn and Shane Stevens.

In the second half Constant Spring put up more of a fight as Fabian Watkins stepped up his game to support Holloway and Clarke. Substitutes Oneal Morrison and Steve Mitchell added spark to their team.

Despite the fact that Arnett Gardens slacked off in the second half and lost their formation, they would still increase the scoreline. Walter Boyd added his second in the 56th minute after controlling a cross from Gregory Messam and coolly converting with the left.

Watkins had two efforts which went across the goal in the 61st and 65th minutes. Arnett Gardens rang the changes introducing Everton Bunsie for Corner Chin-Sue, Davis for Denton Shedden and Maxwell for Boyd.

Maxwell showed his worth in the 84th minute when he collected a pass out of midfield and raced away from the defence before rounding substitute goalkeeper Kirk Williams and guiding home with the left foot.

Davis tapped his effort home in the 89th minute before Constant Spring got a fortunate penalty in time added. Referee Hughill Thompson ruled that Stevens had fouled Morrison and awarded a penalty. Clarke converted the consolation goal.

"This was something that we expected because we started out early and the pre-season preparation was excellent. The objective was to reach the end of the first round final and they have done that in both the juniors and the seniors so we did not expect anything less than what took place today," said a happy Waite.
