Final call for Maritime Essay

THE MARITIME Authority of Jamaica (MAJ) has issued a final call for secondary and tertiary level students islandwide to submit their entries to the 2001 Maritime Week Essay Competition, which was launched in September. Closing date for submission of entries has been pushed to December 31, 2001.

Students 14 to 19 years old are invited to pen a 3,000-word essay on the topic, 'Globalisation and the Role of the Jamaican Seafarer' and vie for several prizes including a personal. A panel of shipping industry experts and professionals will review the essays and select the top entries.

The local shipping community promotes the competition annually during World Maritime Week in September to create and heighten awareness amongst teenagers about the shipping industry and the contribution it makes to world economy. The competition, which began two years ago, has become an important event on the shipping calendar.
