WHY ARE some of us Jamaicans so set in their old slavery ways? I refer to none other than those members of the Munro School Board who in their quest to be seen as the most disciplined amongst the indisciplined took the harsh and draconian position to kick these young men out of school. While I do believe in fostering discipline and would support serious action taken against offenders, depriving them of an education, possibly for the rest of their young lives should not be the board's final answer.
For too long Jamaica as a nation has been built on the notion that "if we think it's not good, throw it away." Little wonder why our streets are so littered with children, many of whom were kicked out of their homes because they're considered to be indisciplined. This kind of attitude, especially when it is coming from those considered to be prudent leaders, does not augur well for a nation struggling with all kinds of adversities, not the least of which is the arrogance and ignorance of our young people brought on by illiteracy, the lack of meaningful training and decent men and women standing tall in our midst who can be emulated.
Did anyone stop to find out from these young men their reason for smoking weed?
We must remember that boys in their determination to fit in sometimes do the darnedest things. I beg the Munro board to think again; discipline yes, but expulsion! Is this your final answer?
