ST. JAGO High's World Championship representative Melanie Walker started the new year in top form with two record runs at the ninth Swizzle/JC Development Meet at the school grounds on Old Hope Road yesterday.

Hurdling perfectly, Walker first set a new mark of 43.6 seconds in the 300m hurdles open beating the 43.9 set by former St. Jago athlete Andrea Bliss in 2000.

She returned in the Class 1 200m to run a sizzling 24.3 on the dirt track going well under the 24.8 set by Vere Technical's Aleen Bailey in 1999. Walker now holds the meet records for both the Class 1 and Class 2 200m.

Five more records were set at the well-supported one-day meet.Walker's team-mate Kerron Stewart ran away from her rivals to clock a fast 11.4 in the Class 1 100m shattering the 11.9 set by another St. Jago athlete, Danielle Browning, in 2000.

Calabar's Sheldon Leight was also in record-breaking mood. He won the Class 1 110m hurdles in 14.6. The old record, 14.7, was set by Wolmer's Maurice Swaby in 1996.

Tywayne Buchanan of Wolmer's broke the Class 2 800 metres record clocking 2.02.7 in his heat to go under the 2.08.8 set by the Edwin Allen Comprehensive's outstanding middle distance runner Aldwyn Sappleton in 1998.

The other records came in the Class 3 girls discus where Rosalie Dunbar of St. Andrew had a winning throw of 31.74m, bettering the 31.42 mark set by Holmwood's Peta-Gaye Beckford in 2000.

Beckford, however, remained in the spotlight when she threw the discus 38.25m to smash the one-year-old mark of 37.07m set by Immaculate's C. Boweman.

Darkness forced the abandonment of the 4x400m relays in late evening. The main prizes won yesterday will be handed out at a ceremony on January 15 at the offices of Facey Commodity Limited.
