Kemar Lee A fan of music and architecture

By Tanya Batson, Staff Reporter

KEMAR LEE is a 14-year-old student at Jamaica College (J.C.). He is also a member of the school's chapel choir. While he denies being shy, he exhibits a rather quiet manner through our talk.

He has been on the J.C. chapel choir for two and a half years and has been singing with his church, Valley Christian Ministry International, for the last five years.

He notes that he has continued using his talent because of encouragement he has received from persons who have heard him sing. Nonetheless, he has no intention of becoming a singer.

All his aspirations in music lie in becoming a professional pianist. This is only as a side venture, however. In fact, Kemar feels that he has too many things that he thinks he would enjoy doing to settle on a single career. He admits that he may later choose one, but at present he intends to try different ones out for size.

As such, he aims to get involved in architecture for five years as well as medicine and teaching Spanish or music for another seven years each. Kemar's need to try different things later in life comes out in his present loves.

Nonetheless, his interest in music is by no means fleeting. What he mostly appreciates are melodies, which explains why he likes classical music. He explains that his favourite piece is Mozart's 'Coronation Mass in C'. "The piece moves alot and you have a lot of high notes." Kemar has an affinity for high notes. This is easily understood when it is realised that as he sings treble, high notes are his specialty.

Kemar explains that he loves singing, and he enjoys hitting those high notes. "Music makes me feel good in myself," he explained. He also hopes to soon be able to tackle the piano. He had tried briefly in the past and it seemed like a difficult thing to learn. This does not in the least turn him away from his desire to master the instrument, however.

Kemar is also a great admirer of architecture. As such, one of his favourite channels is Home and Garden, because of the building aspect. He points out that the Spanish Town Cathedral is one of his favourite buildings. In fact, he admires the cathedral for the actual building and the acoustics. He adores the ornaments, sculptures and the stained glass. Other pieces of architecture which he admires are the London Bridge and the Simms Building at Jamaica College.

His admiration for architecture is also related to his respect for his father, whom he says is the person he treasures most in the world.
