'They deserve the death penalty'

THE EDITOR, Sir:

KINDLY ALLOW me to bring the attention of the Prime Minister, and every citizen of my beloved country, Jamaica, a matter which is of great concern at this time.

I am shocked and horrified at the intensification in acts of violence, especially murder, and the general lawlessness in our country; most recently, the massacre in the 100 Lane area, including defenceless children.

I am a believer in forgiving my fellowman if he wrongs me. The word of God, by which we all should live, says we should forgive. However, forgiveness by the one who suffers the wrong doesn't mean that if that same wrong is against the law of the country, the offender should not pay the penalty.

I would like to submit that one of the reasons for the daring and callous nature of the crimes now being committed, is the halt in enforcing capital punishment. God gives governing authorities the right to punish evildoers. Those who commit murder and other crimes, do so, knowing what the penalty is. They choose to go against the law, thus they deserve the penalty.

I would like to encourage the Prime Minister not to be intimidated by any organisation that does not have the well-being of this country at heart. The highest authority in the universe, God the Creator Himself, gives you the right to punish evildoers.

I am, etc.,

IVY HARVEY,

Gregory Park P.O.,

St. Catherine
