JAMPRO a facilitating agency

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I make reference to the article by Dawn Ritch "Unsolved Mysteries" in The Sunday Gleaner, January 13, 2002.

In that article she stated that "JAMPRO is a Government agency, which is supposed to ensure the integrity of Jamaican exports and nurture them", and went further to suggest that JAMPRO is responsible for certifying agricultural products and implementing related standards and regulations. This is not so.

JAMPRO is Jamaica's Export Facilitation agency and is authorised to administer the certification of exporters.

Other arms of Government are given the authority to certify specific classes of export products, a role which sometimes extends to setting and/or implementing standards. The certification of agricultural products resides with the Ministry of Agriculture.

With regard to the specific incident referred to, the matter is before the courts.

I am, etc.,

Mrs. PATRICIA FRANCIS

President
