Information Minister leaves for emergency meeting on CMC

MINISTER of Information, Colin Campbell, was expected to leave the island today for Antigua where he is to participate in an emergency meeting to discuss the closure of the Caribbean Media Corporation (CMC) in Barbados.

The one-day emergency meeting for CARICOM leaders with responsibility for Information will be held tomorrow. The meeting was proposed by the Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, Lester Bird.

A release from the CARICOM secretariat said that the "Caribbean Community (CARICOM) is spearheading an all-out effort to get CMC back on stream, mobilising support from various sectors of civil society to shore up efforts of the executive body of the regional media house."

The release said the emergency meeting would hammer out a course of action to ensure the resumption and sustainability of the functioning of the CMC, which was closed at the beginning of this year.

Recommendations from this meeting will be submitted to the 13th Inter Sessional Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government to be held in Belize in February. Minister Campbell will be accompanied by Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Jamaica Information Service (JIS), Carmen Tipling. They return to the island on Tuesday.
