Windwards restrict Jamaica

ST.GEORGE'S, Grenada, CMC:

LEG-SPINNER OLANZO Jackson and left-arm pacer Deighton Butler shared seven wickets and placed the Windward Islands in a perfect position for first innings honours over Jamaica on the rain-hit second day of their Busta Cup first-round match at Queen's Park yesterday.

Rain prevented any play before tea but the Windwards made good use of the final session, reducing Jamaica to 178 all out, and posting 47 without loss by the close, with Devon Smith 27 not out and Rommel Currency on 18.

Play began shortly after a 3.30 inspection by umpires Glenroy Johnson and Nainoll Macum as morning showers left groundsmen carrying out mopping operations for most of the day.

Jamaica, 159 for eight overnight with Gareth Breese 41 not out, added only 19 runs in six overs before their demise.

Butler spectacularly bowled top scorer Breese for 48, after the former West Indies youth captain had struck six fours and one six in a 59-ball knock studded with fluent drives.

And Jermaine Lawson, Breese's overnight partner, did not add to his score of 17, and was caught behind - wicketkeeper Junior Murray's sixth victim of the innings - off Butler.

Audley Sanson, who slammed a four and a towering six over mid-wicket off Jackson was not out on 10 at the end.

Butler, who took the only two wickets on the shortened second day, finished with 3-52, with Jackson 4-36.

Currency and Smith then set about backing up their team's fine bowling effort, and apart from Currency giving a difficult chance to Leon Garrick off Sanson at cover, the pair played solidly.

Smith, who played a starring role for the West Indies Under-19s on tour of England last summer, looked his usual smooth self, counting four fours so far - two against off-spinner Ricardo Powell and one each off pacers Sanson and Lawson.

The Jamaican bowling attack has been weakened as legspinner Brian Murphy is nursing a hamstring injury he suffered while batting on Friday.
