LIGHTWEIGHT JOCKEY Peter 'Pam Pam' Bryan highlighted yesterday's10-race programme at Caymanas Park with three winners to be joint leading rider with Clive Lynch on six winners.
Bryan opened his account aboard the vastly improved RED LADY at 7-1 in the fifth race over 1400 and then came back to win the next race aboard the even money favourite BLOODY MARY who streaked home by all of 8 1/2 lengths at 1300 metres.
He completed the three-timer aboard the lightly weighted MAHOGANY at 8-1 in the closing race (overnight allowance) over 1600 metres.
Never far off the pace in what appeared a very knotty race on paper, the five-year-old gelding from the in-form stables of Noel Ennevor circled the leaders PROCEEDACCORDINGLY (made most) and MR. VIGOROUS entering the straight and kept on strongly to win by two lengths from fast-finishing BISTRO (5-1) in a field of 11.
A product of the Jockeys' School, the 29-year-old rider who started his career in April 1996 then had to wait an agonising 16 months to ride his first winner, said he was happy with his form in recent months.
"I'm very confident these days and with my agent (Bentley) securing some good mounts, I am looking forward to my best ever season," Bryan said.
"Although I've made a good start, I don't have the jockeys' championship in mind at this stage," he said.
"If my good form continues and I am in a position to challenge for it in the second half of the year, then I'll give it a try. My main goal is to establish myself as the top lightweight jockey at Caymanas Park this year."
Clive Lynch, the leading jockey at the start of the day with five winners, notched one victory in 7-5 favourite SUL EXPRESS to be heads in with Bryan. They are just one ahead of veteran lightweight Robert Reid and in-form Panamanian jockey Ameth Robles.
Each had one winner, Robles aboard 7-1 chance CRIME OF PASSION (7-1) in the third race over the circular nine course and Reid aboard super fit PRINCE ADAM (2-1) who raced to his third consecutive win this season in the fourth race over the straight five course.
Meanwhile, the highly fancied debutante SEARCH LIGHT won the Eight Thirty Sprint for native bred three-year-old maiden fillies over the straight five course, feature event on the 10-race programme.
Installed a 7-5 second favourite under champion jockey Charles Hussey, SEARCH LIGHT raced prominently in third as the 3-5 favourite PRINCESS TALIA, with Shane Ellis up, led comfortably in mid-track from 11-1 chance NOT GUILTY.
Running out off a true line leaving the quarter pole, PRINCESS TALIA came under pressure approaching the distance, giving way to SEARCH LIGHT who stormed through to beat her by 2 3/4 lengths in a field of 10.
A chestnut filly by Pat N Jac out of Shining, SEARCH LIGHT is owned by Nap Stables, trained by Percy Hussey and bred by his mother, Ruth.
The highly thought of 3-y-o colt COURT CASE, who made an impressive fast time debut over the straight course on November 28, extended his streak with a wire-to-wire win in the Restricted Allowance II for native bred three-year-olds over 1500 metres.
But he had to be driven out by Kenyatta Davis leaving the furlong pole in order to stave off pesky BLACK THATCH (9-1) by three-quarters of a length in the eight-strong field.
A chestnut colt by Al's River Cat out of World of Light, COURT CASE is co-owned by Yugeshwar Misir and Ivor Patrick and trained by eight-time champion Kenneth Mattis.
