Highways versus railway

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I MUST say that I am rather discontented with the decision made by the Prime Minister about Highway 2000. I do not think that he and the individuals involved in making such a decision took into consideration 'every thing'.

Some time ago when he mentioned the aspect of reinstituting the railroad system in Jamaica, I figured that it would have been in place by now.

Think of it. The money that is now being used to construct the highway could have been used for other things for example: getting the trains back on track. By so doing, the 'permanent' jobs created would be far more beneficial than the ones now that are only there only until the 'work is done'.

Jamaica might have to very soon think of 'carpooling', like other countries, because of the many vehicles we now have and have been coming into the island on a daily basis. If the system had been implemented, I believe more people would consider riding the train instead of driving, hence, saving both money and time.

I am, etc.,
