The hazard of firecrackers

THE EDITOR, Sir:

THERE ARE some jurisdictions in the US where firecrackers are viewed not only as a fire hazard, but also as an environmental pollutant.

This past holiday season showed a great increase in the use of firecrackers/rockets, in residential communities in upper St. Andrew. The users apparently amused themselves, but also caused alarm and great concern to some neighbours, especially those with shingle roofs who had these hazards rained on them, along with the noise.

Sir, why are laws made and not enforced? Why are so many of 'uptown' residents so hypocritical? They complain of lawlessness in the society, but they break the laws when it suits them. Is this an example for their children?

How can law-abiding citizens cope with all these negatives daily criminal activities, madness on the roads, loud, blaring vulgar music day and night, and now this craziness.

Could a man live happily with a touted most beautiful woman on earth, but she has no soul and gives him no peace of mind? Similarly, can law-abiding citizens live in this most beautiful corner of the planet, but are constantly traumatised, and have no peace of mind? What sense this makes?

I am, etc.,

J. CARTER
