The Causeway and enviro concerns

THE EDITOR, Sir:

THE DREDGING now going on adjoining the Portmore Cause-way is for expansion and progress, consequently appreciated. But I have a concern.

A mound of earth has been made to ensure that the water that comes from the dredge does not flow on to the road. It is intended to cause the water to flow into the sea.

I ask myself if this mound will not prevent water running off the road in the event of a heavy rainfall in the area. I discern no breach to allow out-flow if there is a significant amount of rainfall.

It may be there, but perhaps not as conspicuous as it should to remove my doubt or to allay my fears that any exist. Portmore residents now have grave difficulties getting to and from work when it rains. Consequently, we are very reluctant to tolerate the oversight or neglect on the part of anyone or group of people that will increase the woes now being experienced.

Will somebody publicly advise us that rainwater will run off or if the breach in the mound will allow water to run off, or if not, correct the situation. If flooding occurs in this area as it is now, it will remain muddy for many days.

I am, etc.,

V.L. RODGERS

St. Catherine
