C'wealth chief clears the air

THE EDITOR, Sir:

The Commonwealth Secretary-General, Don McKinnon, has asked me to convey on his behalf the following message in the context of the article about his visit to Jamaica that appeared in The Gleaner on 22 January. "Sir, I wish to clarify a remark attributed to me in The Gleaner dated January 22, 2002 regarding Pakistan's attendance at CHOGM, which is misleading. In reply to a question from Prime Minister PJ Patterson and in the context of our discussions I said that I was disappointed that Pakistan had not met the Commonwealth requirement to return to democracy in two years, hence they were not able to attend CHOGM. Rt. Hon Don McKinnon, Commonwealth Secretary-General". I would be grateful if this could be published on your letters page. I accept that your report is based on the content of the news release issued by the Office of the Prime Minister of Jamaica and we at the Secretariat will also take this up with government officials. I would also like to acknowledge the otherwise excellent press coverage the Secretary-General received during his visit to Jamaica.

I am, etc.,

JOEL KIBAZO

Director

Communications and Public Affairs Division
