THE operations of Devon House and Things Jamaican Limited have been restructured, in keeping with the Government's decision to streamline and rationalise the operations of its agencies.
As a result of this reorganisation, the operations of Devon House and Things Jamaican Limited will now be split between the Devon House Development Company Limited (DHDC) and the Jamaica Business Development Centre (JBDC).
Maintenance
The DHDC will now own and maintain the museum, the leased shops, restaurants, gardens and grounds comprising the Devon House complex. The company will be staffed by professional property managers and maintenance staff.
The JBDC will take over Things Jamaican's responsibility for the promotion of small businesses and craft products. It has assumed full responsibility for providing business development services, such as training and technical support, to the micro and small enterprise sector.
As a result of the restructuring exercise the positions of approximately 40 employees of Things Jamaican/Devon House will no longer be required, effective last Friday. However, both the JBDC and the DHDC will be assessing employees to determine those who have relevant expertise that can be retained.
The total cost of the restructuring exercise is approximately $35 million which includes $15 million for debt and redundancies and the sum of $20 million to refurbish the Devon House property.
