Senate gets youngest member today

KERN SPENCER, a 28-year-old University of the West Indies graduate, will today be sworn in as a Senator by Governor-General Sir Howard Cooke, in a ceremony at Kings House.

Also, he has been appointed Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of National Security, the first time an appointment has been made to that position in seven years.

Mr. Spencer replaces Maxine Henry-Wilson, general secretary of the PNP, and former Information Minister in the Government. She stepped down as Senator in October to concentrate on her duties as general secretary ahead of the upcoming general election. She also relinquished the Information portfolio.

At 28, Spencer will become the youngest member of the 21-member Senate. He has served as president of the UWI Guild of Undergraduates and as general secretary of the PNP's youth arm. He has been working as executive assistant to Labour Minister Donald Buchanan.

Senator Aloun Assamba who was recently appointed State Minister for Industry, Commerce and Technology, will also be sworn in today.
