THE EDITOR, Sir:
I READ with interest the supplement in the Sunday Gleaner of the January 27 regarding The Bank of Nova Scotia.
It indeed was a good year for the bank, recording record profits in excess of $3 billion. This was realised in part no doubt, by streamlining the organisation, closing three of its branches and making redundant a significant number of workers.
They have now informed that they are charging us fees to transact lodgements and withdrawals in their banking halls. The sheer thought of this is repugnant to my mind. Are we to expect that supermarkets and gas stations are soon to adopt similar fees, to cover their staffing costs of cashiers and attendants?
If it was the case that profits were low, then maybe the new fee would be understood.
Scotia Bank must realise that while we are happy to have them, Jamaicans have been loyal to them over the years ensuring consistent increases in profitability, this might very well change. They are renowned for shrewd and dynamic management but in this case they have erred and appear to be gluttons for more profits.
I encourage them to rethink this charge and immediately rescind it. I for one will be moving my accounts to a bank who will not penalise me for lodging my money or withdrawing from my savings account.
I am, etc.,
