Security guards and police work

THE EDITOR, Sir:

THE LATEST initiative to be executed by Security Minister, Dr. Peter Phillips, concerning involving security guards with the Jamaica Constabulary Force is a source of concern to me as a Jamaican. We have already experienced the trauma and chaos which comes with improperly trained policemen and other negative impacts it has precipitated on us as a people. We would never like to magnify our sorrows, nor create a much more dangerous Jamaica.

The security men must go on further training to fill in the interpersonal skills they lack so badly. There should be no rush to change the structure of the force to involve security guards. They might be a plus to the existing system but let us approach it with some level of uncertainty. As one philosopher puts it, "if you begin with certainty, you shall end in uncertainty, but if you are willing to start with uncertainty, you shall end in certainty."

We need a respectable bunch of men whom we can put our trust in and rely on in times of difficulties. We also need a uniformed police force with no traitors and a level of co-operation from the security guards to create a unique image for Jamaica, so we can restore the pride and respect we once shared with the international community. Every patriotic Jamaican would like a society free from criminal elements and be able to travel to any and every point of our beloved country.

I hope we can give total assistance as our predecessors who fought valiantly for what they had then. We are hoping for a better Jamaica with a more acceptable police force.

I am, etc.,

PARIS TAYLOR
