Healing our nation through one love

THE EDITOR, Sir:

AS REPORTED in your paper on Sunday, February 3, several well-known Jamaicans and my family gathered for a major press conference at Bob Marley's home on Hope Road to ask the Jamaican people to heal their personal relationships and thereby teach One Love to the world, as many of your billboards claim.

Joining us in this invitation to the Jamaican people was Luciano, Denroy Morgan of Morgan Heritage, Abijah, Antonnette Haughton, Dr. Dennis Forsythe, Mike Henry and Mortimo Planno. Trevor Munroe, Barry Chevannes, Tony Rebel and Kymani Marley were unable to attend but added their voices to ours.

Please understand that this initiative, which we call "The Gathering of the Healers: The Healing of the Nation," is neither a naive endeavour nor a leap of faith but a serious attempt to see if humanity has evolved enough to begin to heal its societies through Love. Jamaica, not Washington, Moscow, Rome or Mecca, is the logical place to start.

The Jamaican people are already some of the most loving on the planet, despite the violence of a few.

Its 500 years of suffering gives it the moral authority to ask other nations to exercise their forgiveness. Also, many messengers of love like Marley, Luciano, Morgan Heritage, Abijah, Tony Rebel, Dennis Brown, Bushman, etc. all were birthed in this rich Jamaican soil.

All of us attending the press conference will continue our efforts to ask the Jamaican people to join us in this noble experiment. We invite you to join us to heal your personal relationship through One Love and true forgiveness - to turn your past hatreds into present loves.

One Love does not mean that you seek out another's company, allow abusive or unfair treatment or forego attempts to right past wrongs or seek reparations.

It simply means that you understand that your "transgressor" is, like you, a child of God sent here to teach love and has temporarily forgotten this.

As more and more people within Jamaica join us, the results will outpicture in the society through lower crime and murder rates, increase in tourism and the economy, better national health, lower divorce and accident rates, etc. Is this really possible?

We will be returning to the island in a few months to launch our next vision, "The Fires of Forgiveness: The Healing of the Nations." One Love,

We are, etc
