Rear Admiral Brady receives appointment at IMO

Brady

REAR ADMIRAL Peter Brady, Director General of the Maritime Authority of Jamaica, was recently elected Vice-Chairman of the Sub-Committee on Standards of Training and Watch keeping (STW) at the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) in London.

Rear Admiral Peter Brady will take over from Mr. K.H.K. Rangan from Singapore and officially, will commence his duties in January 2003. His nomination was tabled by the delegation of the Bahamas and seconded by the United Kingdom. The motion was unanimously supported by delegations from the 68 member states and over twenty-seven intergovernmental and non-governmental organisations.

This first IMO appointment for Jamaica marks another milestone and indicates increasing international recognition for the country as a creditable maritime state.

The Sub-Committee on Standards of Training and Watch-keeping looks at training as it relates to seafarers and makes the necessary recommendations to the Maritime Safety Committee, leading to the formulation of guidelines and amendments to the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) of which Jamaica is a signatory.

This places Jamaica at the centre of international activities which develop standards to govern and regulate the training of seafarers worldwide and is a significant achievement for the Caribbean region, which prepares seafarers, most of whom received training matching STCW standards at the Caribbean Maritime Institute (CMI) in Jamaica.

Jamaica was named among the top 71 member States in 2001 to have attained IMO White List status. There are 160 members of the Organisation.
