Jamaicans set world push record

By Elton Tucker, Asst. Editor, Sport

The Jamaican bobsleigh pair of Winston Watt(front) and Lascelles Brown slide down the chute during a heat in the two-man event at the XIX Winter Games at Salt Lake City, Utah, on Sunday. The pair clocked 4.78 seconds in their final heat to establish a new world push record.

Salt Lake City, Utah:

JAMAICA finished the two-man bobsleigh event at the XIX Olympic Winter Games on a high Sunday after establishing a world push record of 4.78 seconds in the fourth and final heat.

The record made up for a disappointing 28th place finish and driver Winston Watt and his brakesman Lascelles Brown were overjoyed.

"I am feeling like a gold medal winner right now," Watt said shortly after he had completed his last run.

"We are leaving here with the track record and I am sure it is going to be unbeatable," added Watt who said they were determined to do well despite their low placing going into the last heat.

"We knew we were the best in the push," Brown said. He added: "We have been on a lot of circuits and have not been 'outpushed' while winning two world push championships."

The Jamaican duo blamed lack of sponsorship for their failure here to break into the top 10. According to Watt, money was needed to get better equipment and to give them the opportunity to have more time on the ice.

"This sport is very expensive. It takes a lot of travelling as we do not have a bobsleigh course in Jamaica. We need generous sponsors to enable us to visit the various World Cup circuits."

He said he was hopeful that there were sponsors out there who would be willing to come forward.

"I hope people have seen the ability the Jamaica team has and have recognised that we had equipment problems. They will have seen that we have strong athletic ability and the driving is coming along well but we just need the equipment to be in medal contention."

Jamaica completed the four runs of the two-man bobsleigh competition in three minutes 14.94 seconds, 4.83 seconds behind the gold medal winners Germany-1.

The margin appears small but with the top bobsleighers travelling at over 80 m.p.h and times being measured in hundredths of a second, 4.83 is quite a large margin.

Jamaica's times for the four runs were (note push times in brackets) 48.59 (4.84), 48.58(4.83), 49.01 (4.81) and 48.76 (4.78).

Gold medallists Germany-1, with driver Christoph Langen and brakesman Markus Zimmerman setting a track record 47.44 on the third run, completed the four runs in 3.10.11, Switzerland-1 (Christian Reich and Steve Anderhub) got silver in 3.10.20 while Switzerland-2 (Martin Annen and Beat Hefti) were bronze medal winners in 3.10.62.
